The Importance of PVC Corner Protectors in Exterior Wall Insulation Systems

Under reasonable conditions, the service life of an external wall insulation system shall not be less than 25 years. The success or failure of a project, and whether it can reach its designed service life, hinges on the details. Here, "details" refers to key points in the project, such as door and window openings and internal and external corners. These areas are crucial; flaws in the construction of these areas can lead to significant quality risks for the insulation system.


(1) Doors and windows are frequently touched and easily damaged by impacts. Damaged corners, if not repaired promptly, will eventually weather and leak, leading to wall cracks and other problems. (2) The corners of the exterior walls are where the stress is most concentrated and cracking is most likely to occur. This is because the insulation boards are interlocked at the corners (simulating cracking and settlement). To ensure the straightness of the corners, it is difficult for construction workers to control the thickness of the plaster layer. Areas with too much or too little plaster can only be leveled with polymer and mortar. Applying these materials too thickly will cause cracks. Furthermore, the insulation boards are glued on piece by piece, and any quality problem during the assembly process will have significant consequences.


(3) The skills of the workers, the construction process, and the selection of raw materials are all crucial. At the same time, during high-altitude operations, the scaffolding (which affects the adhesion of the insulation boards) and the construction workers often do not cooperate. The swaying and natural movement of the scaffolding make construction difficult. Then, when laying the mesh fabric, repeated compression is required during the wrapping process at the corners, wasting time and making quality control difficult. A common problem encountered during construction is that the mesh fabric often bubbles during the re-wrapping process, especially in small corners and edges. To avoid affecting the verticality of the corners and reduce the thickness of the plaster layer, workers often cut the mesh fabric with a utility knife and then re-press it into the plaster. This defeats the purpose of re-wrapping the mesh fabric at the corners.


If the process is changed, the mesh fabric should be laid from both sides of the corner, and then the corner guards should be installed. This avoids bubbling at the corners. Furthermore, corner guards can conceal problems caused by excessively thick plaster layers. Even if problems occur, they are hidden inside the corner guards and will not affect the overall quality and appearance. Additionally, improper mortar mixing, failing to strictly adhere to national design requirements, can create hidden dangers in the project. These dangers are not immediately apparent and may take a year, two years, or even longer to manifest. Once these problems appear, remedial measures are difficult to find, repair costs are high, and it is difficult to determine the responsible party.


Why use corner guards, and what is the difference between using them and not using them? Corner guards maintain the verticality and horizontality of wall corners, effectively controlling the thickness of the plaster layer and preventing excessive shrinkage, which can lead to corner cracks. If a corner cracks, water seepage will occur. The insulation board suddenly absorbs a large amount of water, and as we all know, water flows downhill, increasing the seepage area and thus increasing the load on the insulation board. Currently, exterior wall insulation construction strives to ensure the system's sealing and integrity. The sudden influx of moisture is unbearable for the insulation board; if not properly cared for, it will retaliate, causing wall seepage, condensation, and cracking. At this point, we begin to ponder and search for answers: why did this happen, and where did the problem occur?


 The key issue lies in certain details. Construction at inside and outside corners is often done by feel, especially in hard-to-reach areas where there are no fixed standards. Construction workers, in their rush to save time and earn more money, often overlook these details, which is where the problem lies. Furthermore, moisture seepage causes a large amount of gas to build up in the wall. If this gas isn't released promptly, it can cause the insulation board to detach from the wall. Even if it doesn't bulge immediately, freeze-thaw cycles will eventually cause the wall to slowly crack, inevitably reducing the lifespan of the external wall insulation.


Now, we use corner protectors to cover up these shortcomings, binding the corners together vertically and horizontally. Even if a single insulation board cracks accidentally, it's unlikely to cause a large-scale detachment of the entire system. Using PVC corner protectors greatly ensures the straightness of inside and outside corners. Because the product itself has a uniform thickness and size, and comes with 10cm of mesh fabric, the tedious process of wrapping the mesh fabric is eliminated, increasing the impact resistance of the corners. Achieving verticality and horizontality of the corners is very easy.
