What is steel wire mesh for exterior wall plastering?

Oct. 20, 2026

Steel wire mesh for exterior wall plastering—also known as welded wire mesh for exterior plastering—is a construction material specifically designed to reinforce and prevent cracking in exterior wall plastering projects. Typically manufactured by welding hot-dip galvanized steel wires, it features a flat surface and high tensile strength. It is embedded within the exterior cement mortar plaster layer to provide structural reinforcement, prevent the formation of hollow spots (delamination), inhibit cracking, and stop the plaster from detaching. It serves as an essential auxiliary material for exterior wall insulation systems, new construction, and the renovation of existing exterior walls.

Exterior walls are constantly exposed to the elements—sunlight, rain, and significant diurnal temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, because the underlying wall materials vary—such as the differing shrinkage and deformation rates between concrete structural elements (beams and columns) and masonry walls—the plaster mortar is highly prone to cracking. In severe cases, this can lead to hollow spots, the detachment of the plaster layer, and even water seepage through the wall. Installing steel wire mesh helps unify the plaster mortar, distribute structural stress, limit the propagation of cracks, and effectively reduce the risk of water leakage.

Given the damp environment of exterior walls, the rust resistance of the steel wire mesh is of critical importance. For professional construction projects, hot-dip galvanized steel wire mesh is the preferred choice; its thick zinc coating ensures it remains rust-free even when embedded in moist mortar. Conversely, cold-galvanized or uncoated ("black") welded wire mesh has a very thin zinc layer, making it highly susceptible to oxidation and rust in the damp, alkaline environment of an exterior wall. This can lead to the appearance of yellow stains, blisters, and cracks on the wall surface; consequently, the use of such materials is strictly prohibited in exterior wall projects.

Steel wire mesh for exterior wall plastering has a wide range of applications. It is required for full-coverage plastering on new buildings, plastering over exterior insulation layers, reinforcing junctions between new and existing wall sections, bridging the joints between concrete shear walls and aerated concrete block masonry, and for the repair or renovation of exterior walls. During construction supervision and final inspection, the installation of this mesh is a key point of scrutiny; any failure to install the mesh, or insufficient coverage, is classified as a construction defect. The use of steel wire mesh for exterior wall plastering is simple to implement and moderately priced; it significantly enhances the integrity of the plaster layer, thereby reducing the risk of cracking or detachment. Selecting qualified products and ensuring the mesh is installed according to standard specifications are essential measures for guaranteeing the quality of exterior wall projects and extending the service life of the walls.
