How do you distinguish the quality of stainless steel mesh materials?

Aug. 03, 2026

The chemical composition of 201 stainless steel is 1Cr17Mn6Ni5, while that of 304 is 0Cr19Ni10. The primary difference lies in their nickel, chromium, and manganese content: 201 contains 17% chromium, 5% nickel, and 6% manganese, whereas 304 contains 19% chromium and 10% nickel. These compositional differences result in variations regarding color, corrosion resistance, resistance to acids and alkalis, and toughness. Below, a manufacturer of stainless steel mesh outlines methods for distinguishing between these materials:

Methods for distinguishing the material of stainless steel mesh are as follows:

1. Regarding toughness: 304 stainless steel is tougher, whereas 201 is harder and more brittle. If you use a hard scratching tool to test the surface, 201 will show a distinct scratch, while 304 will not.

2. Regarding acid and alkali resistance: Due to its lower nickel content, 201 stainless steel does not resist acids and alkalis as well as 304.

3. Regarding corrosion resistance: Because 201 contains manganese, it is prone to rusting after prolonged exposure to humid or high-salinity environments; 304, which contains no manganese, does not rust under these conditions.

4. Regarding color: The manganese content in 201 stainless steel gives it a darker appearance compared to 304, which has a brighter, whiter finish.

These are four methods for distinguishing between stainless steel mesh materials—have you mastered them? When purchasing stainless steel mesh, be sure to inspect the product carefully to ensure you are buying genuine stainless steel mesh.

Stainless steel mesh is widely used for screening, filtration, protection, and decoration. Its applications span numerous industries, including mining, petroleum, chemicals, food processing, pharmaceuticals, machinery manufacturing, architectural decoration, electronics, and aerospace.
