Application of Gabion Meshes in Landscape Projects

Oct. 29, 2026

Many people may still be unfamiliar with the term "gabion" (or "gabion mesh"). Literally, it refers to a cage filled with stones. In reality, however, there are various types of gabions, including wire-mesh gabions, gabion mattresses, "ecological" gabions, and general wire-cage structures. Today, let’s explore what exactly a gabion is.

A gabion is a metal cage or box filled with stones or other common earthen materials, frequently used to construct retaining walls or other outdoor barriers. Typically fabricated from stainless steel, galvanized steel, or powder-coated wire, these units are assembled into rectangular shapes using spiral binders or circular fasteners. Beyond their use as stone walls, they are also employed in hydraulic engineering—for instance, to protect riverbanks and foundations from soil erosion. You may have also noticed similar wire cages used in garden design; these are known as "landscape gabions." The application of these structures has evolved well beyond their traditional, purely functional roles, now extending into the realm of decorative design. They can be incorporated into gardens in unexpected ways—forming fences, gates, or even functional garden features.

"Ecological" mesh technology is also highly effective in garden settings. In hydraulic engineering, the primary considerations are reliability and stability—the essential foundations for any such project—with ecological benefits serving as an added advantage. In landscape architecture, where the traditional focus is often solely on aesthetics, these ecological mesh structures offer a unique advantage: they integrate seamlessly with the surrounding environment, creating a beautiful and harmonious effect. Furthermore, they provide structural integrity and durability that many conventional landscape elements lack.

As urban areas expand and their capacity increases, the resulting pressure on the environment grows. This necessitates that landscape projects be not only durable and practical but also aesthetically pleasing—a challenge that garden gabions are uniquely well-suited to address. The use of landscape gabions in landscaping projects—particularly for bank stabilization—has gained widespread recognition and acceptance. Ecological mesh technology is now being employed in numerous landscape projects across my country, including the Riverside Forest Park in Yizhuang New Town (Beijing), Yueliangwan Park in Xincai County (Henan Province), the Olympic Forest Park (Beijing), and the Xiasha Garden in Hangzhou (Zhejiang). These applications reflect a growing trend toward reconnecting urban life with nature.

Landscape gabions offer several key advantages: they are aesthetically pleasing, help define a project’s theme, are easy to install, boast a long service life, and support sustainable development. Furthermore, using recycled concrete or waste stone as fill material can help reduce costs associated with transporting construction debris.
